Billy saw Elijah go down, sliding down the hill, the bike tumbling away from his body. His hands grasping, pulling at the grass and gravel. They came to a stop, Elijah and his bike, and his hand curled into a fist, beating the ground.

Billy dismounted his own bike and started scrambling down the hillside. His feet slid, the grass slippery from the misting rain; his hands stretched out behind as he eased himself crablike towards Elijah.

He could hear Elijah's cursing now. Almost to him, he watched as Elijah rolled over onto his back and kick out at his bike, before covering his eyes with his hands.

Crawling on hands and knees, slowly because of the rain, Billy reached out to stroke his shoulder, "You're all right, Lij. Can you get up?"

Elijah raised his hands from his eyes, looking at them, lower lip forming a pout.

"Skinned my hands."

"Let me see."

Elijah raised up from the waist, legs straight out in front of him. Billy held out his hand and took hold one of Elijah's. Turning them over, he ran his fingers over the palm, pushing bits of grass and dirt away. The skin was raised in many small half moons, bits missing, showing red but not blood.

Billy heard Elijah hiss when Billy's fingers touched Elijah's skin. Billy brought his mouth down, close to the palm and blew away the sting. He raised his eyes to Elijah's face. Saw Elijah's lips parted, eyes focused on Billy's.

Billy looked back down to the short fingers. Square palm. Blew again over the reddened skin that bled a little now. Billy brushed his fingertips over the rough skin on the heel of Elijah's hand, feeling the jaggedness of the skin, bent his head that half inch and kissed his hand, starting where the thumb met his palm moving down to his wrist, up over the torn skin, ending with a soft kiss to the middle of his palm.

He raised his head again and met darkened eyes. "Better?"

Elijah's eyes still focused on Billy's lips. A drop of rain ran down the tip of his nose. His tongue darted out to moisten his own lips. He nodded.

"Hurt anywhere else?"

He nodded again and smiled, the corners of his mouth turning up. He bent his leg, showing where his loose cotton khaki's had torn.

"Skinned my knee, too."
