Ficlet: Paris. lotruni future verse

Dominic, (lotruni - verse)

***ETA***: I completely forgot to say this: future verse and rather filled with spoilers. I just, em, got carried away with myself.

Today is the first day that Dominic has found himself alone since his book was released. He's not meant to be alone at this very moment, but should be at a party being held in his honor. Small and intimate, Sofia, his editor, had promised, to celebrate his first night in Paris.

It's not his first night, however. That weekend so long ago is still very much in his memory, as is the man with whom he stood in this very spot upon the Eiffel Tower and kissed.

Dominic looks towards where he thinks England (and Billy) should be. He wonders, as he often does, if Billy is still teaching and writing. If he still lives in the little house in Baskerville. If he's happy--if he's found someone else to be in love with.

These thoughts used to make Dominic sad, but no longer, or at least not as much. It's not been so long ago that Dominic has forgotten the way Billy smelled and felt, the way he would reach for Dominic in the middle of the night and demand so much--so much that was freely given. It's been just long enough, however, that Dominic can think back to those time without the pain that haunted him since the day he left.

A couple approaches him, just as had happened to Billy and him so long ago, and asks in halting French if he would take their picture. He obliges but it carries its memories back with the action. He again wondering about Billy, wondering what Billy did with everything Dominic left behind him. Lining up the shot and clicking the shutter reminds him of the camera Billy had given him for Christmas. As he hands the camera back to the couple, he wonders if Billy had ever developed the roll of film left inside. If he kept the camera, or the clothes and books... If everything was thrown into the bin when Billy realized he was gone.

He's quick to push those thoughts from his mind. Paris was where everything was right, he reminds himself. In Paris they were able to love each other freely and nothing felt threatened or rushed. They held hands rather than clinged to one another, and that was the difference. This is what Dominic decides he can hold onto now.

It's only moments later that Dominic decides to call Sofia and offer his apologies, once he's back on street level and walking towards his hotel. Tomorrow he'll find someplace to live. He's decided that he'll make Paris his home. No more wandering, or running from memories. He'll stay here and let his heart heal.
