So, this is here for me for when I come looking for it again later

The past two weeks, I thought I had a calcified stone in my salivary gland, because that's a weird thing that happens to me sometimes. I sucked all the sour candies in the world, which is the prescribed medical advice, and drank more water and applied moist heat but it wasn't getting better. So yesterday, my mom, tired of listening to me moan about, worried because I'd quit eating, and startled at the amount of swelling I was experiencing, duck marched me into the emergency room, and it was a good thing she did. No stone but an abscess. I was appropriately horrified. They gave me some iv antibiotics, steroids to bring down the swelling, and vicodin from the pain. It was a pretty good time (especially as the doctor went from "I'm not sure what we can do for you but I'll give you one vicodin before you leave" to "oh! you poor thing! that must really hurt! here's allllll the vicodin in the world (if the world is going to last for three days)." She assured me that I wasn't crazy, too, which was nice, considering I already knew how fucking bad it hurt.

Anyway, onto the ENT this morning, who wanted to perform surgery on it either this afternoon or tomorrow. I spent a lot of the last 24 hours being really horrified. So, his next idea was to admit me so that I could get IV antibiotics for a few days but I promised that I would take the medicine precisely as prescribed (and I willllll too) so he's let me come home to see if the antibiotics will work. I go back Monday morning and if it's worked, then I'm good. If not, then straight to the hospital for the really awful surgery. I'm thinking good, healthy, healing, happy antibiotics thoughts.

Of course, the antibiotics are super strong and have immediately killed my taste buds so everything, even water, tastes awful. I still have to eat the sour candies to flush the gland, so it's still pretty horrible.

I'm going into work tomorrow to get things sorted as next week couldn't be a worse week for me to be out. I suppose August would be even worse but next week is pretty damn bad. Luckily, I now have a super awesome boss so I can be out without worrying too much, and whose response to what happened was, "thank your mom for me. I'm so glad she took you to the ER."

So, there's that. For when I'm looking for it again in the future. Hello, future!self! I really hope you are drinking water* and simply looking for a cute medical story to tell the kids.

*my gland woes are caused because I'm habitually mildly dehydrated. Drink your water, kids! Awful things will happen to you if you don't.
