My attempt to be organized! I wish I had started this ten years ago (!) when I started this journal. This is definitely a work in progress and doesn't begin to include even a quarter of the fics and art that I've read/look at and loved. It was just the ones I had at hand at this very moment. I'm working on it :D

There were so many amazing stories this year! And I have just gorged myself on them for the last few hours. These are some but not nearly all of my favorites :D

Three Times Remus Kicked Sirius Out of Bed by [livejournal.com profile] mindabbles
Summary: The first time, he couldn't believe his luck. The second time, everything was very sticky. The third time, well, would you share the bed with something that eats socks?
So sweet!

Heavn (version 2.0) by [livejournal.com profile] magnetic_pole
Summary: Teddy’s always been able to hook them up. The afterlife’s no different.
Well written with a modern feel to it. I quite liked it.

Untitled by [livejournal.com profile] red_squared
Summary: “Oh, stop being so grumpy. That mistletoe nonsense doesn’t prove anything.”
So clever!

La Isla Magica by [livejournal.com profile] magnetic_pole
Summary: Slowly, Sirius comes alive. Five weeks in hiding on La Isla Mágica.
The characterizations in this are quite different from what I usually have read, and I loved how vibrant that made everything.

Lupin's Magical Loaves (Get Your Buns and Alibis Here) by [livejournal.com profile] woldy
Summary: In which there is uprising in the kitchen, kneading dough is not a euphemism, and Sirius devours sticky buns.
I'm an absolute sucker for a bakery AU

Things We Do Not Say by [livejournal.com profile] erised_rain
Summary: Boys celebrate Christmas in Paris, a certain mirror is way out of line, James might be a bit jealous and some things simply can’t be put into words.
Just beautiful

City of Aquatint by [livejournal.com profile] veeagainst
Summary: After they leave Hogwarts, Sirius goes to visit Remus, who is studying in Oxford.
*sings out* perfection! I really loved this.

Lost That Easy by [livejournal.com profile] veeagainst
Summary: For the prompt: During the first war, Remus is injured during a battle and Sirius finds him first
Wonderfully well written.

Inconvenient by [livejournal.com profile] magnetic_pole
Summary: Remus is lying. Sirius is angry. Something's about to explode.
So heartbreaking and precisely what I was looking for when I suggested the prompt.

Transfigured and Refigured by [livejournal.com profile] peskywhistpaw
Summary: “Our love’s – a – a transient waggling cock monster!” Remus faces insecurities their first proper Christmas together. Knitting helps. Sort of.

Of Snowball Fights and Memories
by [livejournal.com profile] laroseminuit
Summary: Things would have gone very differently, thought Remus, if Sirius Black had gone to Azkaban.

The funniest thing in both of the fic gifts I received this season is that they both deal with the theme of home. I loved that.

Home by [livejournal.com profile] xylodemon, who is one of my most favorite writers of r/s
Summary: One week became two weeks became three weeks became a month.
I had asked for story about Sirius finding out that Remus was living rough once they've left Hogwarts and this definitely fills the bill. I love it. It's so much about Boys in Love and has one of the things I LOVE in fic, which is fantastic dialogue. The characters are really well done, too--they're grown up, they seem real and I love seeing them find each other.

Home Sweet Home by anonymous (so far).
SummarySummary: Pomona Sprout stakes out a section of the library. No one seems to mind—quite the opposite, in fact.
This was written for me during the [livejournal.com profile] hoggywartyxmas exchange, the first time I had participated. It's absolutely a perfect story for me and I really can't wait to see who wrote it. The focus here is on Pomona Sprout and her relationships with others--Remus, Minerva, Irma but with herself as well as she creates and works on a project. I don't know. I'm not doing it justice. It's so well written and the characters are really well done. I just love it.

Like I said, this was the first time I participated in this fest and there are sooo many good stories so far. I'm a bit behind in reading (I'm getting there!) but it's just... So far, it's really about the characters, which I love. Check them out! I have a recs list started but I'm going to post them in one go.

The Electric Fizzing Prick Pistols, or Whatever
Summary: Everyone is born with Words on their arm that connect them to their Soulmate. James finds his, Sirius had everything figured out back in First Year, Peter doesn’t talk to girls anyway, and Remus thinks he’d very much just like to put his earmuffs back on and disappear.
This was a pure delight to read: funny, imaginative, magical.

Summer to Your Heart
Summary: They met years ago when they were young and unattached. But now that Remus is married, Sirius is only summer to his heart.
A bit of a melancholy read but still really lovely.

Le Songe
Summary: At first there is nothing, then there is The Dream: a jumbled, fleeting scene blanketed in the same winter snow as the boyhood memories penned in fading ink.
Quite beautifully written

In Other Words (I Love You)
Summary: When Sirius wakes up the morning after Frank and Alice Longbottom’s wedding, there are several thoughts vying for attention in the early morning fog of his brain. I am never drinking again, weddings are utterly insane, and fuck I would kill for cup of coffee right now are discarded, however, when Sirius’s eye lands on five inky-black letters scrawled on his forearm.
I love AU's, I really do, especially when they're as long and plotty and delicious as this one.

Affection Falling Just Short of Love
Summary: Sometimes Remus goes into empty houses and steals books, Sirius is the only person that’s ever caught him at it.
Adorable!

And one for Suits!
Practice Makes Perfect
Summary: Mike's a giver.
Hurt and comfort and terrible sweet.

Finally caught up on [livejournal.com profile] rs_small_gifts fic/art (and just in time for [livejournal.com profile] slashababy to be posted, which I'm starting on tomorrow--it's after midnight and freeeezing in my house). I have read sooooo much r/s today and it was all good (seriously, I never felt like skimming or skipping--how awesome is that for an exchange? Everyone got good stuff). There are my favorites.

It's the Thought by [livejournal.com profile] gryffindorj
Summary: Remus and Sirius have agreed to make each other presents this year. Sirius finds the task a little daunting.
Warning (though not for me): rather explicit (NC-17 rating well deserved)
So much to love about this one: dialogue, characterization, dialogue (I really liked the dialogue).

At This Moment (You Mean Everything) by [livejournal.com profile] littlepistols (aka cackling_madly).
Summary: Remus couldn't say no to his mates and their latest adventure, especially when Sirius was looking at him like that…
Sex and rock-n-roll, what more do want out of a marauders fic? The characterizations, particularly Sirius, are really well done and it's very well written, too.

Comfort and Joy by [livejournal.com profile] pavlablack
Summary: Non-magical, modern-day AU. Sirius can't get his new neighbor out of his mind.
I was about three or four paragraphs in when I started reading slower just so this would last. Really well done, well told story.

The Unlikely Survivors' Club (Or The Bloody Lucky Bastards Brigade, as Sirius Black prefers to call it) by [livejournal.com profile] rosemaryandrue
Summary: In which Sirius Black destroys baby monitors, Nymphadora Tonks is still a disaster in the kitchen, and they're only missing one person to make a perfect Christmas. Secondary pairing Nymphadora Tonks/Emmeline Vance
Another one that I knew within a few paragraphs that I wouldn't want it to end. Excellent (and I haven't even finished reading it yet *fingers crossed on the ending*). Come for the Remus/Sirius, stay for the Tonks/Emmeline

Home for the Holidays by [livejournal.com profile] laroseminuit (for [livejournal.com profile] rs_small_gifts)
When Dumbledore told Sirius to lie low at Lupin’s, he didn’t know that Sirius was already a resident there.
I've really enjoyed all the stories/artwork posted so far this month at [livejournal.com profile] rs_small_gifts but this one spoke to me, dude. It's really beautifully written, wonderfully detailed, and the characterizations are subtle but true. I was really delighted the entire way through reading it.

The switch by some authors to keep their work hosted only on AO3 rather than Livejournal (removing it when it'd been there before) makes me sad. It means I can't share their work with friends who hate AO3. I miss that conversation and community that happens (or happened) on LJ. I'm not shaking my cane in the "back in my day" way but I do miss it. For what it's worth, no matter where else I may decide to post, they will always be here on [livejournal.com profile] escribo, too.

Anyway :D Recs! Because fandom, no matter where it happens, is awesome.

Remus/Sirius:
The Door through the World by [livejournal.com profile] amuly (also on AO3)
Growing up under the stern hand of Walburga Black was nothing less than torture for young Sirius. Until one day, he found a small, forgotten door, hidden in a store room. It was through this door that Sirius discovered a whole other world, and a whole other life. Ah-May-Zing. I printed this out (all nearly 100,000 words) in something like 8 point font and no margins so that I could take it with me to Florida to read in the train station (since I had hours to wait) and then finished it just before we pulled into Orlando. There is so much to love about this: the characterizations, the story--the structure of it, the telling, the idea of it. The writing is so good. I was able to get totally lost in it (which turned out to be excellent thing because I'd forgotten to charge both my iPods before leaving and this helped me to tune out my surroundings. Excellent work. Definitely one of the best stories in r/s.

Ever After by [livejournal.com profile] busaikko
Non-magic AU. Once upon a time, an astrophysicist was wooed by the gay Scheherazade... I like stories that feel really grounded and real, and this is that.

Of Cinema and Sticky Notes by [livejournal.com profile] bluepeony
AU: Remus Lupin is the office bore. Sirius Black is the office sweetheart. They fancy each other, on a purely aesthetic level. Here's another. It's anxious and lovely, which aren't two words I usually use together but there you are.

I had some more from rs_games but I've lost the post :( and have to go back through them, which is fine since I haven't even finished reading half of them yet. I know there was a lot of great stories and artwork there, though.

Suits
Answer in the Form of a Question by Blackstar777
Everything seems to be back on an even keel after the drama at Pearson Hardman and the emotional tsunami that ripped through Mike’s life: Gram, Tess, Rachel. So of course that’s when he and Harvey end up having phone sex. The sex scene in this is amazing, whichever one. All of them. It's just a really sexy story.

Best in the World by mskatej
Mike takes ecstasy with a hot client at a Pearson Hardman function but once he’s high he’s only got eyes for Harvey. There is a surprising dearth of (really good) sex in Remus/Sirius fic so...it's not that I forgot about sex but it's not what I tended to look for in fic there for a while. Suits fandom? Rife with it. Every kink imaginable, every position, every possible combination. Soooo much playing with power dynamics, which I love. But mostly? really incredibly written sex scenes. Porn that actually really hot. This is a good example--in character, funny in all the right places, and hot.

So... I was reading through the prompts at [livejournal.com profile] rs_small_gifts and fell in love with one for [livejournal.com profile] damascened, and this whole story is in my head from beginning to end and I'm trying not to think about it too much because it's likely that someone will claim it before I can since I'll be out in the world when claiming begins and my phone is decidedly not smart. But me "not thinking about it" means I've already begun poking about on wikipedia and writing a list of the words I want to use (does anyone else do that?) and thinking about a play list (which is key, and also hard in this case). I can almost convince myself that I'm not falling in love and won't be terribly disappointed if someone gets there first because research on wikipedia doesn't count, right? omg I so want it.

On a related note, and relevant to my current interest: Probability Engine by a member of Team Remus. Steampunk baby, and completely charming. I've actually never read anything steampunk in nature so I can't critique as a piece of Genre but this was awesome with Remus as an Unspeakable protecting genius!Sirius and things happen, adventure-y things. Falling in love type things. Mystery Writer creates a sense of the world they live with a true economy of words--enough to get you there, you know? Not so much that the setting overwhelms the story. I don't know. It's compact and neat (as in tidy), and I enjoyed it lots.

Outside of that, I'm terribly behind with rs_games. I need to start at the beginning, hopefully this weekend. I've got two writing projects I want to finish this weekend, too, that I might start on this afternoon. But first I should work since I'm at work and all. If only my job were a quarter as interesting as fandom.

So, the strangest thing happened. I spent the weekend reading Suits fic. I have a pairing! Mike Ross/Harvey Specter. Why is that strange? Because I've never seen the show...and now I don't want to because I'm rather enjoying my headcanon, which is obviously fanon since I don't know canon. Weird.

Anyway, what I like is that there is plenty of BDSM, D/s, and hurt/comfort. Apparently it's a thing on the show? I mean, not literally since it's primetime and all, but enough to lead to some really fantastic fic. I suspect I'd be really disappointed if it's not blantantly obvious, though. Like, if there's no chance that they'll kiss one day (or, rather, Harvey pins Mike to the wall and ravages his mouth) because both characters repeatedly declare themselve heterosexual at every give opportunity, I couldn't stand it. Not because I'm anti-heterosexual but because...let's a girl's imagination take her to great heights kind of thing.

Anyway. Recs! If you are at all interested in the things I listed above. Also, long, multi-chaptered fics--the fandom is knee deep in them.

Needs Must by thatotherperv.
Holy smokes. The first one I read (and I'll be honest--dropped it into a doc and changed the names to Remus (playing the role of Mike) and Sirius (playing the role of Harvey). That worked for me. But then somewhere along the line I didn't need to change the names. It was still Remus=Mike, Harvey=Sirius, as if Remus and Sirius were actors playing a role. Make sense? Whatever. The writing is excellent and it's smoking hot.
summary: When Grammy needs an upgrade in care, Mike knows that the usual one-off gig as a paid submissive won't be enough. He takes a job he's been refusing for a while - a long-term, full-time contract. He expects his client to be a sadistic asshole. He expects not to like it. He's wrong on both counts. This is, at heart, schmoopy hookerfic.

Good Boy by MajaLi
Summary: After a long process of trial and error, Mike becomes Harvey's sub. Or maybe he always has been.

Gag Order by Joni_Beloni
So...I'm not sure what to say about this one. Read the tags--it's full of Things One Must Warn For (and for good reason). To be honest, when I saw where it was going, I skipped ahead until I found where the comfort starts (around chapter 10) being all "yeah, yeah, yeah bad people in the world, let's get to the making Mike feel better". Still, it's well done. I just have a low angst threshold.

The Care & Keeping of Harvey Specter's Puppy by smartalli.
A little on the sweet side of what I'm looking for in this fandom so I almost didn't read it, but there's this character called Donna (I guess...not having seen the show remember) who sounds completely awesome. I've cast her, too, so I'm not sure I want to see who the actual actress is. Such a weird relationship I have with this fandom. Anyway! This is really sweet, and I like that it's nearly completely from her POV.

ETA:
He's a Friend by [livejournal.com profile] janedujour Mike/Harvey. Hurt/Comfort. Well written. These are a few of my favorite things. Summary: Mike accidentally imposes on Harvey's evening with a "friend" when he is mugged in the neighbourhood and needs a place to crash.

Blurred Haze by Enigmaforum. So...Mike/Harvey. Hurt/Comfort. Well written. Sensing a theme :D summary: the associates of Pearson Hardman take their "welcome" rituals too far.

Human Qualities by tunes84. See above. summary: On the morning his body is used to shatter one of Pearson-Hardman's finest glass conference tables, Mike comes into the office exactly twenty-seven minutes late.

The New Deal by Closer. Gen Mike and Harvey and so perfect. I loved this one. summary: Harvey Specter, second year law student at Harvard, was walking home one night when he found a teenaged runaway named Mike freezing to death on his doorstep.

Insta-rec for your Friday night reading :D Home, Somehow.

This was written for me for the [livejournal.com profile] femmefest but it is honestly one of the best fics I've read in a long time. Beautifully told, kick-ass characters, poignant and intense story-telling. Not really a romance but something different.

Hey hey hey :D As part of my Christmas present, [livejournal.com profile] kiltsandlollies wrote a story for me about Lily Potter and combined it with my (rather strange?) love of postcards (seriously, I have close to 200 postcards. Love. Them.) by writing each part on the back of a card showing art by Donald Hamilton Fraser. The art is gorgeous, as is the story.

Hello hello. These are my favorite favorite fics from the 2011 [livejournal.com profile] shaggydog_swap fest, though there are many more that are so well written and entertaining. I'll likely be adding to this as well because I suffered Fandom Heartbreak at the beginning of this week and so still have a few more to read and comment on when I'm able. In the meantime...

Three Little Words by [livejournal.com profile] oftirnanog. MWPP era h/c, my favorite kind of fic. Brilliant James here, too.

Photograph of a Love Song by [livejournal.com profile] remuslives23 AU Sirius is a photographer, Remus is a jazz musician. Love ensues. some beautiful, sexy, romatic moments.

Shadows from Five Billion Trees by [livejournal.com profile] amuly MWPP era gorgeous, gorgeous work

This Is Who You Are by [livejournal.com profile] so_jayded First War (with MWPP era) As her summary says, experience makes the man. Loved this.

This Is the Life by [livejournal.com profile] xkeijukainenx AU after the war with a Remus who never attended Hogwarts. I love this to bits. The dialogue, characterization, pacing, plot--everything--was exactly right for me. This is very different Remus, one who is at turns obnoxiously camp and heartbreakingly fragile. I just loved it.

When the Bubble Bursts by [livejournal.com profile] remuslives23. An AU that changes the events following Lily and James' death. It's just that first night but so very beautifully told, and so very realistic.

Sunlight by [livejournal.com profile] binarykittens Wonderful dialogue, lots of boys being boys. There's a lovely structure to the story, and the writing is really brilliant as is the characterization. There were a tons of lines I'd love to quote back, especially the last. It was all so perfect.

I Haven't Got a Fishing Pole by [livejournal.com profile] rhye An interesting take on the art, definitely a good, creative use. Quite funny.

Washed on the Shore of Second Chance by [livejournal.com profile] mindabbles Gorgeous AU that gives Sirius a second chance with a Remus who doesn't know him. There's a lot of flirting :D and a great coming together.

Since by [livejournal.com profile] archduck An AU where Remus passes away from his lycanthropy, this fic takes a beautifully well written and incredibly sensitive look at how Sirius deals with the aftermath. Sad, yes, but also hopeful in the end, and so well done.

Two recs posts from me in one day. Strange, I know :D I hurt my back and have spent the last night and day reading fic. These recs are from the 2011 [livejournal.com profile] rs_games fest, which had a theme of "journeys", and I happened to be on Team Remus :D I'll have to come back and add the artists/writers when they're revealed.

There are a ton of good stories, all of which you can find here. These are my absolute favorites but by no means all I enjoyed.

Art
Can't Have One Without the Other by [livejournal.com profile] mypretty_art What I like best about Jamie's work is that it is consistently Remus and Sirius and consistently authentic to the 70s. Also, no one works as well with light and shadows.

Follow Your Own Tracks by [livejournal.com profile] kath_ballantyne Beautiful work. It looks like ink drawn on parchment (possibly the marauders' map?), which give it a timeless appeal, as if it had been created in their world.

Fic
Under a Blue Moon by [livejournal.com profile] only_veetee An incredible, detailed AU where Remus was raised by Fenrir. I love how the relationship between Remus and Sirius builds and the ending is good, too. Excellent work.

Those Who Wander by [livejournal.com profile] thesiriusmoon A cool and different Bring Back Black fic. Quite dreamlike as Remus goes on a quest to find Sirius.

A Place Only We Know by [livejournal.com profile] protegonox First war story coming together story set in Finland. Really great descriptions (I mean, just incredible). The story had true emotional depth, too. I almost didn't read it because it deals heavily with religion (and Remus' loss of faith) but I'm so glad I did. It's wonderfully written.

Where the Heart Is by [livejournal.com profile] edgewareroad A Next Gen story featuring Teddy. Really well written. I loved it just for that.

Riding the Rails by [livejournal.com profile] thesiriusmoon AU set in America during the Great Depression. This is incredibly detailed, wonderfully researched, and an engaging story. Excellent read.

flash/back by [livejournal.com profile] llassah Brilliant "lying low at Lupin's" fic, just incredible. I can't even describe it. The dialogue is great and there's an easiness to the writing, a maturity--the boys are very mature--I just. Seriously one of my favorites.

From Moon to Moon by [livejournal.com profile] izzybeth An AU set in 1426 AD where Sirius travels East along the Silk Road and meets a wolf. So original and so engaging. Great characters, great universe building, and a terrific use of magic.

This rarepair challenge was held/posted by [livejournal.com profile] mwpp_mischief back in September. A list of all the fic is here. There were a lot of good stories but these are my favorites. I'm slowly catching up!

01) All You Need by [livejournal.com profile] eprime (Remus/James)
Summary: Easter hols sixth year, James shows Remus that there's nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be. (It's easy.)

Fantastic dialogue for my secret OTP by my favorite r/s writer. This is really a fantastic James, too. (And I could stare at the prompt picture for ages.)

02) Going, Going... (Gone) by [livejournal.com profile] apohdiopsis (Lily/Alice, Lily/James)
Summary: “It was like a leaf loving a hurricane. It couldn’t last.”

So this Alice isn't how I envision Alice at all but she is quite engaging anyway--alluring. She reminds me of the character of Claire in the movie Enigma--passionate and beautiful and completely selfish. I rather loved this story because of it.

03) On Golden Sands by [livejournal.com profile] museme87 (Alice/James)
Summary: Even after they're both long since gone, Alice will remember him like a hazy dream—his insurmountable youth and the taste of the sea in the air.

This gives us an older, more mature Alice and storybook hero James. I loved that it was told from Alice's POV and she gives us the best of James and a realism that was quite endearing.

04) Beautiful Misfits by [livejournal.com profile] kiss_me_cait23 (James/Sirius)
Summary: War is brewing, and sixteen-year-old Sirius Black has chosen the family he made over the family he was born to. But coming home isn't always easy, and young hearts don't always listen to danger.

Just a moment, but a truly lovely one.

05) Smoke and Mirrors by [livejournal.com profile] perilousgard (James/Petunia)
Summary: Exactly as the prompt says. Petunia has to deal with the consequences of a love potioned James for a day!

This was one of my prompts and the writers did such a good job with it. It's funny and heartbreaking all at the same time. Perhaps the first time I ever thought "poor Petunia".

06) The Moon So High by [livejournal.com profile] pavlablack (Lily/Remus)
Summary: When Remus and Lily return to Hogwarts from the worst Christmas ever, they find solace in each other.

A good insight into Remus, and a chance for something different. The writer has a good rhythm to her work.

[livejournal.com profile] mypretty_art created a picture for my Remus/Sirius story, These Four Kings. It is gorgeous. Jamie is such an incredibly talented artist and I am so lucky that my writing inspired her to draw. Go! Look! And absolutely let her know what you think. Her work is amazing!
fox_confessor: (r_s kiss)
I always think I'm going to do this, and then I don't, and then I spend ages wondering where that really terrific fic I read AGES ago has hidden itself. Let's see if I can make this a habit, yeah?

Take This Sinking Boat (And Point It Home)
Summary: Sent on a mission by Dumbledore, an estranged Remus and Sirius must find a way to push their mistrust and anger aside and work together (NC-17)

Talking of Michelangelo (The Come and Go Remix)
Summary: Remus has always liked to be let in (G)

Smoke Signals (The Beer and Breakfast Remix)
Summary: What we've got here is a failure to communicate (R)

Loneliness Makes Strange Bedfellows
Summary: A gift for the unborn Potter fawn becomes a strange focal point for a lonely Sirius (NC-17)

Lived That Kind of Day
Summary: If anyone had bothered to ask, Sirius would have told them he'd never see home again. But life, he's often found, has a way of surprising you (R)

I Gave Up Dreaming for a While
Summary: AU. Running his runaway wife's café isn't what Remus Lupin always wanted to do with his life, especially not when he's expected to take care of his son at the same time (PG)

The (Idiotic) Things We Do For Love
Summary: Despite the fact that Remus is notoriously straight, Sirius will stop at nothing to win the heart of the man he loves, even if it means risking his manhood in the process (R)

Art Appreciation
Summary: A guilty conscience needs to confess. A work of art is a confession. - Albert Camus (R)

And then there is the really awesome Change Is Strange, which is a remix of my story, Strange How We Change.
