Sooooo mpreg. I'm really confused by this. I know they existed in the other fandoms I've belonged but I never read them yet everytime I see one involving Suits, it's like I can't help myself. I am boggled. How does... And when... Anyone write one? Anyone read one that puts forth a halfway believable scenario? Am I over thinking it? Don't answer that last.

I'm going this Saturday to get my hair cut and colored finally. It's been since...February, I think? Actually, I think I had it cut in June but highlights put in last February. It looks about as good as you think it might. I've been growing it out for a while but it's taking forever. It's finally past my shoulders, not that you can tell because the curls make it look shorter than it is. I can't decide whether to have it dyed a rich brown to match my eyes or go auburn. I'm mostly just happy to get it trimmed and shaped.

Eight more days and I'll be on my way to see [livejournal.com profile] kiltsandlollies. We're going to the Hallowe'en party at the Magic Kingdom, which has become a bit of a tradition. I'm going as Flora, one of the fairy godmothers from Sleeping Beauty, but young Flora who still has a chance with King Stefan. It's rather nice of her not to hold it against Aurora after things did't work out, even if she was one of the co-conspirators in kidnapping the princess and raising her as their own. I totally considered writing this as a fic.

Work has been rather trying. There was a time when everyone connected with my department didn't have drama of one sort or another connected to them. It's a bit infuriating, at least the ones who bring it on themselves. Despite managing this department for four years, this is rather new to me and I haven't figured out how to navigate through everyone's issues yet. Mostly I've just been radiating disappointment, which had worked to some degree.

This morning on my way out the door, I grabbed Bradbury's Dandelion Wine. I think it's his best work. I only made it through part of the introduction with coffee this morning but I keep thinking about my favorite bits. So far, he's said this, on writing:

Before that, like every beginner, I thought you could beat, pummel, and thrash an idea into existence. Under such treatment, of course, any decent idea folds up its paws, turns on its back, fixes its eyes on eternity, and dies.

Ain't it the truth. The things I consider my best stories are the ones I just sit down and write without giving it any really forethought to begin with, and yet I will persist in trying to plan and force something out that I think I should write.

Wikipedia tells me Disney is releasing a live action Sleeping Beauty told from Maleficent's POV in 2014 with Angelina Jolie as Maleficent. Who knew? (No, seriously, who knew and didn't tell me? I miss everything.)

Bradbury rules. Did we already have the Something Wicked This Way Comes discussion? But that quote is awesome, and yes, so true.

I will have to pull a curl to measure true Dani hair length. That, too, is tradition. No point in fighting it. :D

I don't think we did. I would have remembered that. I still remember reading SWTWC for the first time and being deliciously frightened by it. Creeped out. I had seen the movie first and read it years later, and the story was way creepier in this really visceral way. He was so amazing. *twenty minutes of wikipedia later* I so want to read SWTWC again now and just requested it from the library :D

Mpreg is one of those things that I don't get, but file under "whatever floats your boat." I'm very glad that it hasn't been a popular trope in Lotrips :).

Yes, this. I can see it makes some people (and obviously those who write it) happy. It's just a mystery to me.

Mpreg was big in Torchwood fandom. Everyone considered it canon because some asshole writer thought it'd be funny if they threw in a line in the first episode about contraceptives in the rain and Jack jokes "At least I won't get pregnant. Never doing THAT again." Boom, mpreg canon. HATE IT. I've never seen it done even remotely well. Granted I usually won't read it but when I have it's always some burly dude crying and having mood swings and wanting cheesecake. God. Hate it.

I don't despise it, I guess, since I keep reading it. I just can't figure it out. Clearly someone really enjoys it but I can't suspend my disbelief that much. There's no uterus! There's, and this is key, no vagina! How does it work? And even if I was willing to accept the hand waving that happens during birth (seriously, the last one I read had Harvey in stirrups. Can I get a look because this is truly a medical mystery that I need solved.) So, hand waving the biological factors, I don't think men, if capable because of hand waving, would handle pregnancy in the same way. At all. Like at all. And yeah, this one totally had Harvey fucking Specter (okay, I don't know if you watch Suits but imagine me boggling. Cause I'm totally boggling.) crying, and being sentimental over other people's children. Having grown up drenched in Western stereotypes of gender roles, I can almost see the other character, Mike, being the pregnant (and thus, chick) one, but Harvey? He would have had an abortion, suffered manfully for about five seconds, compartmentalized any residual emotion and moved on with life.

Criticism of this particular fic aside, mpreg in general seems like epic Mary Sue insertion fic, more than any OC with lilac eyes and a flowing mane of hair who simultaneously saves the world while being saved herself by a knight in shining armor. I can see no other explanation. Honestly, it kinda makes me want to give it a go. Like, with the right fandom and the right scenario. It'd have to be sci-fi and involve magic gone wrong or alien abduction or medical experimentation. And horror, right? To not be Mary Sue, the guy would have to be horrified. Unless *cackles* so you have a scientist who has figured out how to self-fertilize like a nematode and decides to self-experiment since he certainly isn't getting FDA approval. And then is delighted when he ends up pregnant. Maybe for next Hallowe'en.

I find mpreg confusing and distasteful too -- not that I like preg fic very much in any position on the sex & gender spectrum.

I've read three that ever made the least bit of sense to me, one mpreg Viggo/Orlando by [livejournal.com profile] chaosmanor, one mpreg Orlando/Viggo by [livejournal.com profile] jasmineskie and this mpreg Elijah/Dom by [livejournal.com profile] randominity: You Say That Like It's A Bad Thing

(whoops, bad link there, fixed now)

Thanks for the links. I'll definitely check them out. I'm really curious if anyone manages to make it good.

I don't think the first two are up any more but I might have downloaded them, if you want them.

Honestly, I'm not a big fan of Orlando/Viggo, so I'll be happy enough with just the Elijah/Dom, unless you think they are particularly good--in that case send them my way :D
