Hello! I hope you all had a lovely day yesterday, no matter the reason, even if it was just a particularly rainy Tuesday. And now it's a particularly lovely rainy Wednesday, and in precisely one week I'll be sitting back at my desk, scowling at the world. I'll try not to scowl but I have a work email I got last Friday that I'm doing my best not to think about so I'll have a lot of scowls saved up by then, I think.

Anyway! My mom gave me a Kindle Fire HD, which I had no interest in (we had this discussion over my birthday so she said she didn't ask me this time because I would have said I wanted something else and she thinks I'll find this useful). Help? I don't know what to do with it besides watch West Wing episodes, which I discovered I could do last night (okay, so not totally useless to me now. I love the West Wing!). I kinda want to fulfill her idea of how useful this thing can be to me because she was so very excited about having bought it for me. Can I take over the world using this?

Can't find out today as slashababy is due and I'm not finished. I don't want to ask for an extension because I've been a mod before and because I don't think I'm going to become magically more inspired. I need to just finish what I've got because I think my worry over it is more in my head than what will actually come to pass (the recipient will hate it and Christmas will be ruined). I need coffee.

I also need a to do because if it's suddenly next Wednesday and I haven't done the things I wanted to do, I'm going to be massively disappointed with myself and no one needs to start off the year like that, right? Right. Straightening up. Making a to do. Finishing my slashababy. Watching West Wing.

Has anyone read Water for Elephants? Was it good? Was it soppy? I hate soppy. What I'd really like is some mysteries. Those are my favorites.

Do you already have a Kindle? I don't know how you normally read/access fanfic, but I convert my favorites to mobi files (using either Calibre or a fanfiction downloader program, both free) and then transfer them to my Kindle so I have easy access to them even when I don't have Internet. Archive of Our Own allows you to directly download stories as mobi files so that would be handy. There is also a free Send to Kindle app you can put on your computer and when you open it you just drag files in there (I think you can do this with Word documents, PDFs, and maybe even web pages too but the formatting might not be perfect as it is in mobi format). You may already have a Kindle and know how to do this but if not and you need pointers I'd be happy to give them to you.

Also, some libraries allow you to borrow e-books for your Kindle so that would be handy.

I read Water for Elephants and really liked it. I don't remember it being really soppy--just thought it was a good page-turner. The ending was a little unrealistic but I was okay with it.

And I am with you on needing to get some things done while I have the time off to do it. EIther way, I will probably be scowling right along with you next Wednesday. Good luck with your to do list and have a great day!

Hiya :D I've never had an ereader before. It says I can send things (docs and such) to the cloud and access them there without having to actually download them onto the Kindle. Do you know how that works? I mean, it seems as if it's a separate account that I send things to. Is that right? I think my library does e-books, too. I'll check it out.

Hi--

I haven't really used the Amazon Cloud but since I have bought a lot of books from Amazon, they are already stored in my Amazon library online. If you go to Amazon and log in, there should be something like "Hello Dani" and underneath it "Your Account" in the top right corner of the page. If you highlight that you should get a drop-down menu; then choose Your Cloud Drive and it looks like it will take you through the steps. I don't know if you can do this directly from the Fire or if you need to set it up on your computer first. For more info on the Cloud, I found this article that might be helpful:
http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/amazon-cloud-drive/

And also. www.kindleboards.com is a great place to ask questions--one of the nicest boards I've been on (very few snarky people). There is a section for Kindle Fire and I'm sure if you post a question there lots of people who know much more than I do would be able to help! I know I go there when I'm stuck on how to do something and I've always gotten helpful answers.

What I do is usually buy a book from Amazon & then send it to my Kindle wirelessly. However, since I've been reading a lot of fanfiction lately, I've downloaded the mobi version of the file from AO3, dragged it into Send to Kindle (for the app go to http://www.amazon.com/gp/sendtokindle) on my computer, and there is an option to tell it which Kindle to send it to (I have two) and then to Archive Document in Your Kindle Library. So anything I download this way is also backed up on my Amazon account, though since I haven't used the Cloud Drive, I just go into Manage my Kindle under My Account and it lists whatever I've sent as well as anything I've bought from Amazon.

Anyway, I hope this helps a bit and hasn't caused more confusion! Let me know how it goes and if you think there's anything else I might be able to help with.

No problem--glad to help. I also found info on a Kindle book that is free through today that might help:

Hope you end up enjoying your Fire!

I read Water For Elephants and quite liked it. I didn't find it soppy. I actually wondered if I was even going to like it, as it's not my normal reading material. But I ended up really enjoying it. I've not seen the movie, so I don't know how it compares, if at all.

I like mysteries too, although I lean towards the more tame ones. Have you read any Margaret Maron? I love her. And Nevada Barr. Diane Mott Davidson. Joann Fluke. Carolyn Haines. Donna Andrews. Jeffrey Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme series.

OK, I'll stop now. But all of those are series writers, so if you end up liking any of them, you'll have stuff to read.

Hey! Thanks for the list. The tame mysteries are the kind I like too, like Tony Hillerman, Janet Evanovich, and David Balducci, so I'll definitely give your list a go. I know I've read Diane Mott Davidson before but haven't in ages. I kinda forgot about her. I'll have to see if I can remember where I left off in that Goldy series. Have you read Rhys Bowen? My mom and sister love her but I haven't started on her books yet.

I am going to think of your Kindle Fire as the Kindle Kill it With Fire. Just, you know, in my head. :D You know how I am.

I finished Slashababy! YOU CAN DO IT! Little short skirts and pompoms! And the promise of more West Wing! I am so jealous of being able to have a lovely rainy day in. I am there with you in spirit, yo.

I named it after Fawkes, since I have a Harry Potter theme, but I'll spell it Faux, with a hard x. I crack me up.

I haven't quite finished it yet, but I'm close. I'll probably send it to you tomorrow morning...

Hrmph, sometimes people get ideas about presents. Ed got his sister an ipad mini and she was quite taken aback, didn't look excited at all, even after I set it all up for her. I'd been dubious before. At least her boyfriend liked it :-/

Your fic will be great and your recipient thrilled, I'm sure!

I told Laura that this was after I talked my sister out of giving one to my mom because she said she didn't want one. In retaliation, I plan to suggest to my sister that we get my mom one for Mother's Day. Take that. :D ahaha

Thanks for the extension. I was oh so very clever thinking I could write any pairing but it turned out to be harder than advertised.
