Dom pulled into the driveway of Elijah’s rented house. He didn’t turn off the engine but rested his hands on his thighs, looking at the steering column. Nobody moved and Dom began to wonder if Elijah was going to get out. He turned his head and looked at Elijah who was looking at Dominic, looking at Dominic’s lips. Dom looked down again.
“Day off tomorrow. Should we do something? The three of us.”
“Yeah. That’d be great.” Elijah’s voice sounded forced to Dom’s ears. “The three of us. And Orlando. We should call Orlando.”
Dom raised his head again, twisted around to look at Billy in the backseat, before returning his eyes to Elijah. He wished Elijah would leave. Things had gone well at the club. Dom thought Billy was interested, thought that maybe . . . Didn’t matter what he thought if he couldn’t get rid of Elijah. Yet, there sat Elijah, eyes still focusing on Dom’s lips.
“So, we’ll call ‘round tomorrow? Say about noon?”
“We?”
“Billy and me.”
Elijah’s stare broke away from Dominic’s mouth, their eyes met and his face arranged into a smile.
“Yeah.” Dom observed how Elijah suddenly became all motion. “You and Billy,” gathering his wallet and phone in his hands, “that sounds great,” opening the door, “I’ll see you,” and swinging out of the car. “Tomorrow, then.”
The dome light flashed on and Dom blinked in its light. Elijah started to shut the door, pulled it back open wide, and stuck his head back in the car.
“Night, Billy.”
“G’night, Elijah.” Dom heard Billy’s voice, thinking it sounded flat and stretched. Something occurred to him but he didn’t want to give it too much thought. Wanted to concentrate on Elijah now shutting the door, the car returning to darkness, and Elijah walking away.
Dom and Billy watched Elijah walk to his door and disappear into the house. Dom flipped the rearview mirror again and looked at the reflection of Billy, who still watched Elijah’s door. The something grew stronger in his mind and his stomach clenched. He began to wonder when the night began to go so badly, how to turn it around again.
“Are you going to get in the front or pretend you’re a movie star?”
Billy’s eyes lingered on something outside the car for a minute more and then turned to meet Dom’s in the mirror.
“Less talk, driver.”
Dom smirked while he rearranged the mirror and pulled away from the curb. He made a u-turn and drove back the way he came.
The silence in the car was uncomfortable. Dom felt as though Elijah had not left, as if he still sat looking back at Billy. He wished Billy would sing again, liked that he would sometimes even if there was no music. It was one of the things he liked best about Billy. The silence was too much. “Sing, then.”
“Do you want me to?”
“I didn’t want you to stop.”
“Elijah did.”
“Yeah, well.”
“He fancies you.”
“Yeah, well.”
“You said that once, already.”
They rode in silence for a while longer before having to stop at a light, the same light as earlier, Dom noted. He turned in his seat; Billy was looking out the side window. Dom braced his hand on the passenger’s seat, his foot on the brake, his body stretching in a long arc. He was bothered that Billy wouldn’t sing again. He thought that Billy was angry, angry that Elijah fancied *him* and that Billy wanted Elijah and not *him*, not Dom. He wanted to know.
“Billy.”
Billy turned his head to face him. Dom waited until Billy’s eyes focused on his. They sat for a moment, neither speaking. Finally, Billy said, “The light’s changed.”
“Do you fancy him?”
“The light’s changed, Dom.”
Dom stared into Billy’s eyes for another moment. Watched as Billy watched him. Billy broke first and looked down at his hands, at his lap. Dom turned back around in his seat, placed his hands on the wheel but did not go on. He thought about Billy watching Elijah walking to his door.
Dom reached over and turned on the radio. It still played the same station Elijah had found. Eventually, his foot lifted off the brake and pressed onto the gas. He made another u-turn and again drove toward Elijah’s.
Pulling into the drive, Dom stopped the car. He turned off the engine, pulling his keys out of the ignition. They sat in the dark, not speaking. Billy shifted in his seat, his feet sliding against the carpet. The noise loud in the quiet car. Dominic opened his door and got out. Closing the door, he turned and leaned against it, waiting. In the backseat, Billy blinked back into darkness.
