Soooooo if anyone's gone to a chiropractor before, or knows someone who has, and has nothing but good stories to tell of how all their back pain miraculously went away without medication, on which I am not keen, please share. Somewhere along the line, I gathered the impression that chiropractics would hurt more than help and I'm pretty sure I'm wrong, maybe, but I'm to the point with my back that I'd probably be willing to let someone align my chakras if I thought it would help (and someone mentioning chakras in yoga class is enough to make me strain something rolling my eyes).
Anyway, assurance that chiropractor is a legit thing we're doing these days and not some New Age-y psuedo-medical quakery, I'd appreciate it.

I used to have lots of problems with my neck and chiropractic really helped me. In fact, I need to find a chiro here in Cville to sort out my shoulders and lower back.

My knowledge of chiropractors (lots of my friends use them) is that they are a little more New Age-y than a traditional doctor, but not in a bad way...? They're more open to listening to you, trying different things. They want to work with your body to help it heal itself, not load you full of pills.
My one bit of advice would be to find a doctor that you really feel comfortable with! I told the doctor I saw how terrified I was, and he worked with me to get me to relax before the adjustment. He gave me a lot of information, too, on how the adjustment was going to help, how I would feel afterwards, etc. It was great.

There are two "types" of chiro, those who do manual manipulation--my preferred kind--and those who use the activator technique (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Activator_technique). Both are effective, I just seem to prefer the sound of my bones clunking into place. ;-)
Eff is right, though, you may have to shop around a bit, if you don't feel comfortable with the doc. What you might want to do is ask some people locally if they have a chiro or if they've heard of a local chiro who has good recommendations.
Definitely try it, though. I've nothing but good things to say about how it's helped me manage various types of pain over the years.

And definitely find an experienced and well qualified chiro.
