Soooooo if anyone's gone to a chiropractor before, or knows someone who has, and has nothing but good stories to tell of how all their back pain miraculously went away without medication, on which I am not keen, please share. Somewhere along the line, I gathered the impression that chiropractics would hurt more than help and I'm pretty sure I'm wrong, maybe, but I'm to the point with my back that I'd probably be willing to let someone align my chakras if I thought it would help (and someone mentioning chakras in yoga class is enough to make me strain something rolling my eyes).

Anyway, assurance that chiropractor is a legit thing we're doing these days and not some New Age-y psuedo-medical quakery, I'd appreciate it.

ooh! me! me! It's not new-Age crap at all, and getting your skeletal structure properly aligned will help more than just your back because when you're out of alignment your musculature and nerves are also torqued out of alignment.

I used to have lots of problems with my neck and chiropractic really helped me. In fact, I need to find a chiro here in Cville to sort out my shoulders and lower back.

Thanks for the reassurance! I've been to a doctor for this and physical therapy but it hasn't really helped. I keep feeling like I just need a really good massage. Appointment in the morning, so we'll see!

I have a friend who's a PT and has always been very wary of chiropractors—and also of the school that they hurt more than help anyone. However, after suffering a bad back injury recently, she decided to give in and give one a try. She's totally converted now. And she didn't end up having to go to one forever. It's definitely a matter of finding the right person, though, just like with any other doctor. Good luck!

Thanks for responding! I've an appointment in the morning, so we'll see if I'm converted, too. I really hope so.

I've been to a chiropractor exactly once, and it was one of the best things I ever did. I was suffering from vertigo, and one adjustment fixed me right up!

My knowledge of chiropractors (lots of my friends use them) is that they are a little more New Age-y than a traditional doctor, but not in a bad way...? They're more open to listening to you, trying different things. They want to work with your body to help it heal itself, not load you full of pills.

My one bit of advice would be to find a doctor that you really feel comfortable with! I told the doctor I saw how terrified I was, and he worked with me to get me to relax before the adjustment. He gave me a lot of information, too, on how the adjustment was going to help, how I would feel afterwards, etc. It was great.

Hiya! Thank you for responding! I have an appointment in the morning so we'll see. I'm usually pretty vocal with doctors so hopefully I can have a similar experience.

I wish you could come to my chiropractor. I've been doing chiropractic in different cities and states since I was seventeen, and he's the best one I've ever seen. He has extensive medical knowledge and regularly goes to both medical and chiropractic conventions and seminars to keep on the forefront of new treatment options.

There are two "types" of chiro, those who do manual manipulation--my preferred kind--and those who use the activator technique (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Activator_technique). Both are effective, I just seem to prefer the sound of my bones clunking into place. ;-)

Eff is right, though, you may have to shop around a bit, if you don't feel comfortable with the doc. What you might want to do is ask some people locally if they have a chiro or if they've heard of a local chiro who has good recommendations.

Definitely try it, though. I've nothing but good things to say about how it's helped me manage various types of pain over the years.

It's hard to find good doctors, here. Not for lack of them, as there's three medical schools in the state so we're a bit flooded, especially since I'm in the capital but it seems like there's no good way to find one--no good database. Anyway, I took your advice and asked a co-worker who I knew had been going and liked her chiro, so I'm hopeful. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I had some back problems last year. Months and months with the physio didn't really help, but 2 sessions with a chiro (which I found via my insurance company's "member's preference" section), and he'd diagnosed the problem plus a few other stuff I wasn't aware of. After 6-8 visits, I was quite a lot better.

And definitely find an experienced and well qualified chiro.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I, too, have been to physio with little results. I was doing really well for a while (between August and December) but it's right back to where it was now. Anyway, I'm hoping a found a good practice and we'll see what happens in the morning. Thanks again for the reassurance!

I'm late to this party, but... I've never been to the chiro myself, but my ex-husband saw one after a car accident/whiplash incident, and seemed to feel like a new person afterward.

Better late than never babe :D I am hoping for just that kind of result. Actually, I'm hoping it works a bit like magic because I want to feel better now but we'll see. Appointment in the morning!
