Leave Me Behind
Dominic/Orlando (from
spy__vs__spy)
177 words
("Trouble" Dave Matthews)
There had been a time when Dominic had felt himself balanced as if on the edge of a knife. Even then he had thought his sense of hurtling toward destiny ridiculous, and hadn't Dominic always laughed at Orlando for his naive belief in faith, fate, and love. Those were the first to go for Dominic at the academy and yet they had clung stubbornly to Orlando. He had hoarded them away in some corner of his mind, displaying them to Dominic like a peddler in the spice markets of Khartoum, polishing each and offering them until Dominic hadn't been able to resist.
It had been easy to love Orlando even though Dominic had known better. One doesn't let their heart show in the service because it makes the person instantly vulnerable. Hadn't Billy always told them that, even as he bedded them down. One learned to cut that emotion ruthlessly from oneself as if diseased. Sever it, and love none. For the greater good did they make that sacrifice and yet without thinking--without wanting--Dominic loved.
